Hundred-pace snakes

"Kamanian" means hundred-pace snake in Rukai language.In general, Rukai people called it"Amani","Patada"or"Malidran".

In the ancient time of Rukai history,Rukai people hunted wild animals in the mountain.Woods in the mountain aere full of danger.One of the usual risk of the mountain are hundred-pace snakes.This kind of snakes' special way to attack people made Rukai people feel scared.And it made Rukai people respect them.

Because of that, Rukai people thought that their ancestors are born from hundred-pace snakes.

In Rukai totem and decoration,hundred-pace snake are used to symbolize aristocrat.Hundred-pace snake are often seen on the doors,stobs,eaves,carving,pottery,or even clothes.Because Rukai people think that hunderd-pace snake can protect them.

Origin of Rukai

Once upon a time, there was a brave man.He went to a mountain and found a pottery which is as big as a human being's head.And inside the pottery was a snake egg. The man then brought it home and put it down at the corner of his house.

As the time passed, tje snake egg grew bigger and bigger.One day, a boy was born from the egg.His name was Cololo.After he grew up, Cololo married a fairy called Moakaka.They are the ancestor of Rukai.

Because of that ,pottery are regarded as the ancestor of Rukai people.

The Rukai culture museum

This is Rukai culture museum.It is located at the left side of Wutai Elementary School.Most of the collections in the building are ancient.even some of them ae antiques.This structure was designed by Mr. Dobanan,who is a famous artist in Ruks tribe.The construction were all made by slabstones
